But, if you imply or otherwise neglect to make the comparison between two different kinds of things clear (using "as if" or "like" or another word or words that have the same meaning) to the reader, then it falls under the more general category of "metaphor."

Example: "The woman turned her head towards me and the gaze in her eyes were like black clouds before a thunderstorm."

Without the "like," the sentence is no longer a simile.
