If the check engine light is flashing every second or so with the engine running that means an engine cylinder misfire has been detected

To turn off overdrive in a 2003 Pontiac Grand Am, locate the gear selector on the center console. There should be an "OD" (overdrive) button or a switch on the gear shift. Press this button to deactivate overdrive, which will typically illuminate a light on the dashboard to indicate that overdrive is off. Remember to switch it back on for normal driving conditions when you no longer need it.
Overdrive is the normally allowed position , but if you don't want the transmission to shift into overdrive push the button on the end of your gearshift lever ( P R N etc. ) Your O/D OFF light will light up in the dash .
The flashing red light is for the factory security system that comes with your vehicle, I own a 2002 Ford Explorer and we have the same thing...
