All GM 4T40/45 transmissions have two shift solenoids (A and B) inside the side pan near the upper area. You can see the harness plug that feeds the power and sensor/computer wires on the side at top toward the front of the transmission. These solenoids have a habit of sticking (especially if transmissions are not serviced/fluid/filters/etc on a regular basis) and can sometimes be freed by using Lucas Transmission tuneup fluid. There is no dipstick on the 4T series transmission but there is a fill cap on the top behind the engine/bell housing portion of the case. One must lift the car and drain some fluid out (if full already) to add the Lucas. There is also a plug on the side of the Axle case you remove to prevent overfilling the transmission. When fluid begins coming out that hole, it is full. Make sure to remove at least a quart before re-filling with Lucas and then add Transmission Fluid until you see it coming out of that port hole. Replace the plug and the top fill cap, lower the car, start the engine and allow it to run about 10 min at an idle (check for leaks in case the plug is not in properly) and then drive the car around in a local area for about 15-30 minutes to mix the Lucas into the remainder of Transmission fluid in the transmission.

This may take a few days of driving to show results of the Lucas cleaning and freeing the solenoid(s).
