I had the same problem with my '03 and discovered the selector knob was broken, replaced it and that fixed the problem.
iv had a problem with the vacuum for changing the vent placing i replaced the blue rubber pad behind the vent selector and it works great ( about 20 bucks at a scrap yard
You shouldn't have to, I believe they all come fitted with one, certainly in Canada they do. The socket is under the front oval vent on the driver side,
