Detail Means EVERYTHING I have only built 2 400's with 305 heads, with one casting being a 416 and the other a 601 (DO NOT forget to have steam holes drilled) . They were put together with a very tight buget ($350), Already had a lot of parts from a few years collection (FREE or REALLY cheap). They both had 1.94 intake/1.6 exhaust (better with 2.02 intake) with a lot of at home chamber shrouding, porting and polishing. No idea on any proven numbers. A .045 head gasket. All ARP bolts in bottom end with all new bearing also in bottom end. Stock pistons with new rings , stock rods with some light grinding. Competiton Products had sale, so got two Elgin hyd. .480/.480 lift 230/230 dur.@.050 with 109 LSA 6000 rpm max. Best to keep stock rod 400 under 6500 rpm's with ARP bolt 5500 with stock bolts. One motor (416 heads) in 1980 camaro with best et @ 12.93 Other (601 heads) in 1986 Monte Carlo CL with best et @ 12.66 both cars have had been being built over the last 5 years with a lot of attention to transmission, rearends, suspention, tires and subtracting weight.
