It depends on what the book to your car says. Ours said the best oil is 10W30, but in some very cold conditions 5W30 would be ok. We have a 2002 Impala. When in doubt it is probably located on the oil cap of the car what type of oil you need to put in. We are using 5W30 oil now since some dumb half dead looking mechanic guy who changed the oil last put it in (It really does not get cold enough in North Carolina to need that grade of oil) but so far the car has no problems and when I asked another mechanic, not lying idiot one, he said it should be ok for now.
SAE 5w30 any major brand conventional or synthetic.
I know the 3.4L is 5w30, but I can't remember exactly when they switched the recommendation for the 3.8 from 10w30 to 5w30. Double check the oil cap and it will be on there if you have a 3.8L engine.
