A problem has been detected with the Anti-lock Brake System
It could be a fuse , a sensor , or some other problem
As long as the red " BRAKE " light is not on in your dash , you still have
" normal " brakes
problem with the abs, get it fixed
The abs light is on because you have a problem with the abs system. The light will remain on until the problem is fixed. Once fixed the light will reset itself.
Are you sure it was the ABS light and not the Brake light? The Brake light indicates a leak in the system. The ABS light indicates a sensor gone bad.
The ABS light coming on means that the abs is not working. When braking hard the car could lock up the tires and slide.

I have a 98 dodge Dakota and my Abs light has been on for about 6 months. I read in the manual that if that happens you no longer have Abs brakes. Its probably the same for your vehicle.
Why is my 97 mercedes e420 abs and esp warning light on?
Once you disconnect the negative side of battery for approx. 5 min, put vehicle in drive and pull forward and this should clear the ABS light. Will not clear automatically after starting or in reverse.
The abs light is on because there is a problem with the system. It will remain on until the problem is fixed. Once the problem is fixed it will reset itself after it is driven.
It could be a problem with the ABS system, but if it just comes on by itself for no apparent reason, it may be the ignition switch.
Not sure about the pump but but the previous answer is incorrect. ABS was optional on 1997 Wranglers.
why would the abs light stay on continuously in a 97 contour? I own a 1998 ford contour and the abs light is on all the time. my car which needs new breaks because when the abs light comes on you could have three wheels grabbing when you hit the breaks or two wheels grabbing. what i would do is either check to see if you need new breaks or they just may needed to be adjusted. your rotors could be so worn down that they could also need to be replaced or honed out.
