4.2L, 4.6L, 5.4L and 6.8L Engines 1. Disconnect the negative battery cable. 2. Remove the vacuum hose from the EGR valve. 3. On the 4.6L engine, remove the nut and brake booster bracket. 4. On the 5.4L engine, remove the DPFE sensor retaining nuts and place the sensor to the side to allow access to the EGR tube. 5. Disconnect the EGR valve-to-exhaust manifold tube from the EGR valve. 6. Remove the EGR valve mounting bolts, then separate the valve from the intake manifold. 7. Remove and discard the old EGR valve gasket, and clean the gasket mating surfaces on the valve and the intake manifold. To Install: 8. Install the EGR valve, along with a new gasket, on the manifold, then install and tighten the mounting bolts. 9. Connect the EGR valve-to-exhaust manifold tube to the valve, then tighten the tube nut to 25-35 lbs. (34-47 Nm). 10. Connect the vacuum hose to the EGR valve. 11. On the 5.7L engine, install the DPFE sensor. 12. On the 4.6L engine install the brake booster bracket and the retaining nut. 13. Connect the negative battery cable.
A 1998 Dodge Ram does not have EGR.
That's your EGR valve flow is insufficient. Replace the EGR valve.
take the EGR valve off and spray carb cleaner in the egr valve and in the port. This will some times work as it gets plugged up
After removing an EGR valve from the vehicle, the valve can be flushed with carburetor cleaner. If the valve still sticks then a replacement will be needed.
Code P1491 Means: EGR Valve Lift Insufficient Detected EGR Valve needs to be replaced
It's bolted right on top of the egr valve which is on the back of the engine under the throttle body there will be a small vacuum line going into where the egr valve bolts into the intake
Its under the EGR on the block ya. follow a hose from egr to vsv from underside of car
It should. Look at the EGR valve; it's on the drivers side of the head. If the EGR valve is the same, everything else should be easy to exchange.
A faulty EGR valve can cause a 98 Chevy to fail a smog test. The oxygen sensors should also be tested as they can also cause a 98 Chevy to fail a smog test.
EGR stands for Exhaust Gas Recirculation. The purpose of the EGR system is to lower the amount of oxides of nitrogen the engine produces. The parts of the system are the vacuum actuated EGR control valve, the vacuum switching valve, and the EGR vacuum modulator assembly.
