A common misconception is that B was skipped because of confusion with high-voltage batteries from old radios. But the "B" battery of an old radio circuit has nothing to do with a B-sized cell, which is a 1.5 V (in alkaline) cylindrical cell in the same series as the AA, C, D etc. It's about the same height as a D, but 2/3 the width (skinnier than a C). Not usually found individually, a 4.5 V lantern battery (common in Europe) is actually 3 B's wired together. The link below shows how one can use modern batteries to make a "B" battery for a radio.
