Broken or disconnected accelerator cable?
Plugged fuel or air filter?
Plugged catalytic converter?
Ignition timing?

sounds like the catalytic converter.
There may be something wrong with the accelerator. It might be time to get the vehicle checked out to ensure nothing is wrong.

After you engage a gear and let out the clutch and accelerate the car wont move faster but the RPM's will move up. Also in some rare instances when a clutch disk material separates from the disk its self you wont be able to start the car or even change gears.

Your car should not smoke when I accelerate. Maybe it caught fire because you dropped a cigarette. If my car smokes when I accelerate, it's because the piston rings are loose and oil is getting into the combustion chamber.
Honestly ,to me if it wont start, then it is a power problem! because of Pontiac's alternators and being that the car is almost 10 yrs old you should have that checked!!
