If you have to pump the pedal, I'd think that means the pressure is building up enough to shift. So, there may be air in the system and it may need bleeding, much like brakes.
The clutch operates off the brake fluid reservoir...Fill the brake fluid
Your clutch is operated by a cable , it's not a hydraulic operated clutch on the 2000 Ford Mustang

To bleed the hydraulic clutch in a 1999 Chevy Cavalier 2.2 with a 5-speed transmission, start by locating the clutch slave cylinder, usually mounted on the transmission. Use a wrench to loosen the bleeder valve on the slave cylinder. Have an assistant pump the clutch pedal several times and then hold it down while you open the bleeder valve to release air and fluid; close the valve before your assistant releases the pedal. Repeat this process until no air bubbles are visible in the fluid. Ensure the clutch fluid reservoir is kept filled during the process to prevent introducing more air.
It does not need transmission fluid. you need to fill the clutch up
Put DOT3 brake fluid in the clutch pump located behind the brake fluid resevoir. Then pump the clutch and that should fix the problem
A clutch malfunction in a 1999 Pontiac Trans Am with a 6-speed transmission can be caused by several factors, including worn or damaged clutch components such as the clutch disc, pressure plate, or release bearing. Hydraulic issues, such as low fluid levels or air in the hydraulic system, can also lead to poor clutch performance. Additionally, improper adjustment or installation can contribute to clutch failure, affecting its ability to engage or disengage smoothly. Regular maintenance and timely replacements of worn parts are essential to prevent these issues.
If it's a manual tranny, your clutch going bad
Check your clutch fluid level. If it is at full mark then it may be anything from a sensor to a burnt or just worn out clutch.
You dont..its hydrolic...if the petal spongy..check the fluid level in master..at drive side firewall..if low add..brake fluid...get new master..and or slave... If its slipping...time for a clutch assy....
