Just more details - we bought it used today. The shadetree mechanic we bought it from removed the motor to replace head gaskets. The son (the mechanic himself didn't speak English) said the AC probably needs recharging due to the removal of the motor. We did that today with a large can of R134. After emptying the can, the gauge that came with it is still registering pretty much empty. So how many cans might it take?

How do you recharge the air conditioning for a 1991 ford escort?

It depends on what state you live in. Some states require only professional technicians to do repairs on the air conditioning systems. One main reason being, if you by chance were to hook up the can of refrigerant to the high side, you could be putting 200-300 pounds of pressure into a can designed to hold 75-100 pounds. That could be very disasterous. The low side has a suction that pulls the refrigerant out of the can.
