first drain the water from radiator and heater (i usually just take off the hoses)-then wiggle under the dash and take off all of the screws and bolts thathold the bottom of the dash on--look underneath and you will see the heater core--most books tell you to disconnect and empty the a/c system but it can be done without --disconnect the hoses(it will make a mess when you disconnect them i usually lay down towells to catch the antifreeze--and look for the 4-6 little screws that hold the core in place installing is reverse

I'm sorry but, this answer is hopelessly inadequate. This job, on this car, is quite complex and time consuming.

First be prepared to mark cables, connectors and etc so that you can see what they went to on re-assembly.

Also have a sytem to store and label the many different fasteners that will have to be removed.

I have a factory shop manual and found several areas in which no guidance was offered or where information was incomplete.

I wouldn't start this unless you are an above average mechanic and have good tools and better than average patience.

You have to remove the lower and front interior trim from both front doors.

The front door gaskets must be removed too. This is so the dash support bracket can be taken out.

Remove the negative terminal from the battery

Remove the air bags from the steering wheel and from the dash on the passenger side. Store these with the padded side up.

Remove the steering wheel

Remove the lighting and turnsignal switch assemblies

Remove the dash mounted switches

Remove the nuts holding the emergency brake in place

Remove the rear portion of the console

Remove the front portion of the console

Remove the radio

Remove the instrument cluster

Remove the dash, being careful while separating the wiring harness from it.

Remove the winshield wipers and the trim beneath it. The nuts that hold the rear of the bracket in place are in this plenum area. The manual has arrows pointing to the defroster grate. You cannot reach the nuts from here and the grate will break if you try to pry it out.

Remove the dash support bracket. when you remove the fuse/relay/distribution panel (FDP) from the bracket you may have a very hard time getting this back together.

I had to take all plugs off the back of my FDP, of which there are about 20, and sort the whole mess out. I left the wires hanging from a temporary bracket on the metal area below the windshield until it was time to reassemble. I then put the dash support bracket in, clipped the FDP in pace and the plugged all the connectors into it.

Disconnect the heater hoses and ac hoses.

Remove the heater assembly. One of the bolts, that holds this in place, is hidden under the engine-side insulation directly below the bolt nearest the heater hoses. You will see a tab on the aluminum that you can pull away to reveal it.

Remove the heater core from the heater assembly

Reverse to reassemble.

As I said, label everything, including fasteners.

As you might have guessed, this is no afternoon project. I would set aside a MINIMUM of a couple weekends for this. and as I said before, don't start without a shop manual, good tools and an understanding partner.

How do you chage a heater core in 97 ford f 150 4wd 46 engine v 8?

There is no short cut or fast way to do this. The dash has to come out to access the heater box and replace the core. So the steps in replacing the heater core are to disconnect the heater hoses, remove the dash, to access the heater core cover on the front of the heater case and replace the core. Reassembly is in the reverse order as disassembly. Fill the cooling system with new coolant, and burp the air form the cooling system. There is no short cut or fast way to do this.
