Typically, it may start to make a fairly loud humming noise, especially when turning the steering wheel (a little noise is sometimes normal). It may also 'pulse' when turning the wheel or while driving straight. While turning, steering may intermittently become stiff and then easy. The Power Steering fluid reservoir may be low (this should be checked regularly and never be allowed to run low). Power steering fluid leaks may be present (check for spots under the vehicle and/or 'wet' power steering lines and components). Also, many shops can help diagnose the problem for little or no cost. Try and find one you trust and take advantage of their expertise.
How can you tell if your power steering pump went out? How can you tell if your power steering pump went out?
If the power steering pump is making a whiny noise on a Pontiac Grand Prix, the way to tell if this noise is from the pump or another source is to turn the steering wheel. If it turns hard, the problem might be with the pump. If the belt quiets down after a drop or two of dish soap is placed on the belt, then it was just the belt causing the noise.
If your power steering pump is not working as well as it used to.
The pulley shaft front seal is where your leak is, I believe. I hope that takes care of your problem.
If it is an "S' model it does not have a power steering pump. You can tell by basically having to use a lot of force to love the steering wheel when at a standstill left or right. Si models did come with A/C and power steering.
the Pump does not control this, it is internal to the steering gear system, usually a "Steering Rack" Telling if or not will be a matter of getting the Steering Rack # and checking to see if it capable of variable boost.
It could be a belt, or a bearing, usually the power steering pump. Quickest way to tell if its a belt; spray the belts with "belt dressing". If its a power steering pump, it should get louder as you turn the wheel. Check the power steering fluid level.
Your steering wheel is hard to turn have to use both hands. It usually makes a noise when turning.
Are you sure that it is infact the power steering pump? I myself have the same car and I thought it was the pump but, when I finaly looked at it...it turned out to be the hose! Anyways if it is the pump its pretty easy. I cant really tell you in detail but its down under the serpintin belt.
First is the pump good? Next is there power to the pump?
Not knowing what vehicle you have I can tell you that most power steering pumps require a special puller to remove the pulley off the pump and install the pulley without damaging pump or pulley. This puller can be rented or purchased from most auto parts stores.
car want start timing and water pump on the same belt
