To differentiate between a 289 and a 302 Ford engine, you can check the engine block casting numbers, as they are often stamped on the block itself. The 289 typically has a casting number of C3AE-6015 or C4AE-6015, while the 302 usually has a casting number starting with C5AE or later. Additionally, the 302 has a taller deck height, and the harmonic balancer on the 302 is often larger in diameter. Visual inspection of components like the intake manifold can also help, as the 302 typically has different mounting points compared to the 289.

intake is wider on a 351 block is wider on 351First off do not confuse the 351 Windsor from the 351 Cleveland. The 351 Cleveland was produced from 1970 to 1975. You can tell them apart is several ways. The 302 deck height is 8.2" and the 351 deck height is 9.5". Older versions of the 351 had a deck height that was 1/2" higher than the 302.The VIN # on the vehicle the engine is mounted in will tell you if it is the OEM engine. The 8th digit of the VIN is the engine code. H means it is a 302, N means it is a 351.The engine displacement may be stamped on the valve cover or on the intake manifold.Look at the head bolts. The 302 head bolts are 7/16" diameter and the 351 are 1/2".The Intake on a 351 is wider than a 302 because the deck height is higher.
The relationship between cylinders is more important than the actual numbers The high and the low should not be more than a 10% difference

Just use the correct firing order for the cam you have. They will interchange. Just remember That ALL '85 and up H.O. cams are roller cams. '84 H.O. and most other 302 cams are not.
