Dodge, like all auto manufacturers during that period had to detune the engines & add pollution controls. Most of them used a lower compression ratio, a smaller fuel delivery system& Exhaust gas recirculation systems & retarded the timing. Some also added the first series catalytic converters, which are very restrictive.
