The '03 e320 uses an H7 bulb that can be picked up in the local Track Auto store for about $15-$20 (if one is lucky, may be able to buy a pair for $20).
Passenger side bulb replacement: 10-15 min
With the new bulb at hand (wear rubber gloves to protect the new bulb)
a) opent the hood
b) behind the headlight assembly, remove the 5 inch cover by turning it counter-clockwise less than aquarter of a turn (easier to do it with the right hand)
c) with the cover off, you will gain access to the bulb assembly. Remove it by slightly turning it. It has a flange, so you won't be able to turn it the wrong direction
d) to remove the bulb, use a sharp screw driver or a blade and pry the two metal flanges apart a bit. Once separated a 1/16 of an inch, you'll be able to pull the old bulb out
e) install the new bulb and put everything back in the reverse order
f) test it by turning the car/lights on. Done.

I DID IT. You really don't have to pay dealership for this. No blood donation required. I appreciate all the answers from everyone. I just installed the low beam bulb for the driver's side in E320 CDI which should be same as Gas car. I purchased the bulb at O'Reilly auto parts for $8. Obviously it is not xenon. I tried to take the whole assembly out but it was too much work. So here it is
"HOW TO INSTALL LOW HEADLIGHT BULB IN MERCEDES E320 CDI 2005" . I believe 2003 on are same way.
- 1- Take all safety precautions recommended by the manufacturer.
- 2- Open hood J.
- 3- Hope you have a small hand otherwise it requires blood donation. Reach behind the light and find 5" cap. "TURN COUNTER CLOCKWISE". Not difficult at all.
- 4- Now comes the hard part. They all tell you turn it counterclockwise and it will come right out . "Ya Right". I was about to take a sledge hammer to it. But kept working and it came out.
- 5- The wire is very short to the bulb and it is difficult to work. There is a small tab that is holding the bulb from one side. I used screw driver to push it away and pull the bulb out . Takes patience and persistence .
- 6- Install new bulb while holding with clean rag or latex gloves. Do not touch it with your bare hands. It is hard to push so I used small pliers to squeeze the edges together.
- 7- Re-installation was easy. Just reverse everything you have done above. HOPE THIS HELPS.
