The trans filter is located drivers side just behind the radiator, only accessable from under the car, looks just like an oil filter, be careful when installing the new filter there are 2 sensors just above and below the filter that the wiring harness can get caught when tightening the filter and wrap around the filter and short out and dump tranny fluid all over the floor. That's why I'm here lookin....can't seem to find out which sensor it is

Remove transmission oil pan
if its a manual yes. for an automatic i never try it but Saturn don't like to change its dam possible
if you change filter @4.5 to 5 qts
There are two plugs on the side of the transmission. Remove the lower plug to drain and refill in the upper plug. Also, this transmission uses automatic transmission fluid (ATF) not the heavy 90W oil that older models used.
The Neutral safety switch is located on the back of the automatic transmission. it is quite simple to replace. It is probably easier to replace from under the vehicle, but it is accessable from the top if your vehicle is not equipped with ABS.

Where is the transmission filter location on a 2003 Saturn Ion
automatic transmission fluid in a pajero io
To change the automatic transmission fluid in a 2003 Saturn Ion, first, raise the vehicle and secure it on jack stands. Remove the transmission fluid pan by loosening the bolts and allowing the old fluid to drain into a pan. Replace the filter if applicable, clean the pan, and reattach it with a new gasket. Finally, refill the transmission with the appropriate type and amount of new fluid through the dipstick tube, ensuring the vehicle is level and checking the fluid level as you go.
