i just went through that same thing. And if there was an easier way than taking out the dash i would have run across it. I dont really believe there is. If it ever happens again its off to the shop !!
I had this problem before on a ranger you have to pull the dash board out and it will be right there.
The Heater Core will be located behind the dash. Hope that Helps.
On what?
There's no such thing as heater coolant. You can change your anti-freeze. You might read up and familarize yourself on the basics of a vehicles cooling system, then try autorepairguy.com for step by step instructions.
take it to a shop because the WHOLE dash has to come off and then some more that is why is costs $800.00
Replacement of the heater core on a 1993 Mazda Protege is going to first require the removal of the entire dashboard. Once that is removed then the heater control box will need to be removed and disassembled in order to get access to the heater core inside.

HEATER WISE? YOUR HEATER CORE MAY BE BLOCKED
Heater core will come out under the dash on the passenger side. it is possible to change the core without removing the heater housing. there was two different size cores as I remember but both will fit.
Actually , the heater core doesn't have a drain
The Ranger and Ford Explorer use the same HVAC plenum box and any information on the Explorer is applicable to the Ranger. The actuator motor is located on top of the heater box and you can see it if you fully open the glove box and look in the upper left hand corner on top of the box. Pictures and removal process are described on our Ebay listing or web site at www.heatertreater.net. The factory repair is very involved with removal of the dash, steering wheel and column, evacuating the AC system, draining radiator, and finally removal of the heater box to access a cheap plastic door. HeaterTreater is an inexpensive kit that replaces the blend door with steel components and is engineered to be installed through dremel cuts made into the heater box. The fix is 100% effective and much easier/cheaper than the dealer. cgallen
