The only way to drain the Transmission Fluid for a do-it-yourselfer is by removing the oil pan on the bottom of the transmission. It's sort of a messy, ugly job.

Some mechanics will do this by either:

1) using a pump to pump out the old fluid and replace it with new

2) disconnecting the oil lines that go through the oil cooler and let the engine pump it out (while simultaneously replacing it)

The bad side of these methods is that they do not replace the filter. The only way to do that is to drop the oil pan.

On the 5.4 trition engine with the twenty bolt transmission pan the drain pan has a drain bolt just like the oil pan. once you drain the fluid out it is recommended that you replace the filter and clean the pan. Make sure that you clean all the metal dust from the magnet that is fitted around the bolt hole. The magnet will come off of the pan it is not attached. Some of the expedtions come with a reuseable gasket, if yours has this it will be stamped in the pan that the gasket is re-useable. if not then your filter will come with a new gasket. Becareful when removing the filter, it just pulls out (straight down) but if you are not careful it will pop out and it holds about a pint of fluid which you will find all over you. Once you have the filter off make sure that you remove the old filter bushing from inside the transmission and that the new bushing matches the old one. It should be about a 1/4 inch long and about 3/4 inch in diameter. if it gets stuck in the drain tube carefully remove it with a scribe or small screwdriver, do not gouge the seating surface. it should just slide right out. Slide the new filter up into the drain tube, mount the pan and gasket back into the transmission and tighten the bolts from side to side 180 degrees from each other. I am not sure of the torque value but the transmission is made ofT-6 and it would not be hard to strip the bolts so do not over tighten. probably not more than 14 ft pounds but I am not sure. 6.1 quarts of tranny fluid and done.
