How do you diagnose a 1995 Pontiac Firebird that starts right up every time but dies about 3 seconds later no matter what is tried?

Does your key have a chip in it? This security chip can become loose and if it gets wet or even damp it will cause the car to shut down. You can research this in your owners manual or look it up on line. One other possible answer or option to consider is indeed the fuel system. Look at the fuel filter first, it should be replaced about once a year so if it hasn't been done yet.. it's a very viable option and a fuel filter for that year car should be about $10. The symptoms sound more like a security issue so take a good look at your key, if it's bent up slightly, or the little black chip is loose.. have it replaced for $25 at your dealership!!! ! You may want to try replacing the fuel pump relay, which is under the left kick panel on the drivers side of the car.
