Well if there's a serious electrical problem it would probably set the check engine light off. Other than that, check the fluid level and if required change it. After that i'd have a tranny shop look at it, unless you suspect a particular part. Diagnosis on a tranny without proper tools is difficult if not impossible.
The real problem is manually shifting from gear to gear with an automatic transmission. If you are referring to the automatic upshift, there may be a problem with the EGR system or vacuum system.
