It could be a number of things, in addition to those already mentioned. In regard to the carburator, it would more likely be the power valve in lieu of the accelerator pump. It could be a burned valve. (do a compression test, and a leak-down test on each cylinder to determine the condition of the valve train) It could be a collapsed lifter, or a broken valve spring as well. Also, depending on the care of the engine as well as the milage, it could also be a flat cam lobe. Is it back firing through the carburator, or through the exhaust?

make sure the ignition timing it correct, the accelerator pump in the carburetor could be bad

possibly a loose connection to a sparkplug that is causing misfiring
