Unhook the speedometer cable from the transmission and the instrument cluster in the dash. Take the actually metal cable out. Clean it with solvent. Re-grease with "lithium-based" lubricant. Re-insert.

Also check for fraying. If so, replace cable.

To fix the speedometer and odometer on a 1996 Ford F-150, first check the speed sensor located on the transmission, as a faulty sensor can cause issues. Inspect the wiring and connectors for damage or corrosion. If the sensor is functioning, the problem may lie in the instrument cluster itself, which may require disassembly and inspection or replacement of the speedometer gauge. Finally, ensure that the vehicle's fuse related to the instrument cluster is intact.
