This is worth a try for a quick fix. I have a 99 Econoline w a V-6 with 250k miles on it. The lifter was stuck and my mechanic told me the engine was just shot and to start looking for a new van.
I put a quart of automatic Transmission Fluid in the crankcase and let it idle for 20 minutes, then changed the oil. For the oil change I used 4 qts of 10-30 oil and 1 quart of Marvel Mystery Oil. After a hundred miles, I added a can of BG MOA.
The transmission fluid disolves a lot of grunge in the engine. but thins it out so much, you can't drive w it or use high RPM. MMO is great and so are BG products.
I've put another 5 K on the van and it's running great! Just a slight tick from a slightly loose tappet. Give this a try. It might do the job, and save you a lot of money. Hoping to get quite a few more K out of the engine.
