Assumming it's a typical older V-8........Find the #1 cylinder; usually the driver front. Pull the spark plug out and turn the motor in it's normal rotation slowly. With your finger over the hole, you should feel air gush out; stop turning the engine when this air just stops. The engine is now at #1 TDC, or in other words, the motor is at the top of the compression stroke on the #1 cylinder. This is where you find the timing mark lines up @ O. Pull the distributor cap off; if you are really lucky, the rotor should be pointing at the spark plug tower that goes to the #1 cylinder. If not, pull the distributor out of the block, and rotate the rotor and put back in until the rotor points at #1. You will have to point the rotor at about 20-30 degress before or after the #1 rotor, as the shaft meshes into the gears. You may also have to get a screwdriver or whatever to slightly rotate the oil pump drive rod slightly to get it to line up with the distributor shaft. Make sure the distributor seats fully on to the block or you will have no oil pressure!

How do you put a distributor back in time on a Geo Tracker?

To set the distributor back in time on a Geo Tracker, first ensure the engine is at top dead center (TDC) on the compression stroke for cylinder one. Then, remove the distributor cap and note the position of the rotor; it should point to the number one cylinder. Adjust the distributor by loosening the hold-down bolt and rotating it slightly to align the rotor with the correct terminal for cylinder one. Finally, tighten the bolt and recheck the timing with a timing light to ensure proper alignment.
