On my '96, I had multiple malfunctions like this. It was finally traced to a ground wire under the dash. The wire was under the right side and bolted to the cowl strucure. The bolt was in place but slightly loose so that arcing had eroded the bolt hole. The shop drilled a new hole and replaced the bolt. This also affected the climate control panel and message center (flickering and unexplained alarm chimes) and occasionally caused the passenger seat to move unexpectedly while driving. The message center sometimes showd other trouble indications as well. The shop started by throwing parts at it following whatever trouble codes were found. Thankfully, the used car lot has a 50/50 warranty plan. Even so, I wound up paying about $300 to get this traced and fixed.
