I had trouble with a Made in China Chrome dipstick. I took an angle grinder with a cut off wheel (not a grinding wheel, too aggressive) and flipped the grinder upside down, mounted in a vise so you can use two hands. Hold the tube with both hands and gently roll it across the wheel at a slight angle. The idea is to remove as little material as possible. Taper the end of the tube so it gets slightly smaller at the bottom. Tap it into the block with a small hammer. Repeat the grinding if necessary until the tube taps in without much effort.

How do you install an engine oil dipstick on a smallblock 305 engine?

Drive it into the hole in the block. You can take a slightly larger piece of tubing and cut it at an angle to serve as a punch. Lube the dipstick tube and the hole in the block. Make sure your dipstick tube is correct for the engine.. for example, the tube used on 1-piece rear seal blocks is smaller than the older 2-piece seal blocks, so some aftermarket dipsticks end up being to big to go down the hole. Same goes for cheap chrome plated dipstick tubes. Hope that helps you out.
