As you listed this in the Saturn Vue category I will assume you have a Saturn Vue. The 2004 and up Saturn Vue engine was manufactured by Honda and it is an interference engine. The belt and water pump must be replaced every 100,000 miles. All other years used a GM V6 that was also an interference engine. The 4 cylinder Saturn Vue did not use a belt but had a chain.

It is an interference engine. It is an interference engine.
The 1.6 liter 4 cylinder , has a timing belt , and IS an interference engine The 2.0 liter 4 cylinder , has a timing chain , and I don't know if it is or isn't an interference engine
The 2.4 liter 4 cylinder , which has a timing BELT , IS NOT an interference engine I don't know about the V6
If the engine is an interference engine and the belt breaks you can almost be certain that there is damage. If it is not an interference engine there will be no damage. I could tell you if you had listed the make, model, year, and engine size.
It is important to know the type of engine in a car. The 1988 Subaru GL-10 does in fact have an interference engine.Ê
The 2.0 liter 4 cylinder ( IS NOT ) an interference engine , I don't know about the 2.5 liter V6
