You can check the Transmission Fluid, there is a little window on the side of the transmission on the drivers side that shows the fluid level and you can also add transmission fluid on that same side. There is no dipstick to check the level.

Where is the transmission dipstick on a 2004 Mercury Mountaineer?

If it's like the 2003, it won't have one because it is a sealed system. Ford thinks the transmission fluid they use will last forever..LOL, or they want the transmission to fail so you will have to pay BIG $$$ for a repair. You can check the fluid level using the check/fill plug located on the drivers side of the transmission. It is the smaller of the 2 plugs (larger one is the drain plug).
