This is a little tricky. You open the trunk, no engine. You open the hood, no engine. What gives? They don't call them exotic cars for no reason. Believe it or not, in the 1998 model and others as well I'm sure, you access the upper engine compartment from the inside of the car. Depending on what you are doing, you may need to remove the passengers front seat. In any case, you will need to slide the seats forward for easier access. You will need to keep the convertible roof up. There are several locking mechanisms located on top of the horizontal panel located behind the two head rests. Simply unlock these mechanisms, raise the panel up, slide the panel toward you (inside the car) then place it outside in a safe place. This will give you access to the top of the engine where you can change the air filter and do simple maintenance. Last year I had to change my water pump. Removing the panel behind the seat will give you better access.
