How do you re-program the keyless remote on a 2000 passat?

In the VW manual it says;

Insert the master key into the Ignition lock and switch on the Ignition (don't start the engine), Lock the vehicle from the outside, manually using the second master key or valet key, Press button A or C on the remote control one time and then wait at least 2 seconds, press either button once again, one time, switch off the ignition and remove the key from the ignition lock. This completes the manual programming. Note; You have only 30 seconds to perform steps 2 thru 4
