To remove the fuel line on a 2002 Mercury Sable, first, relieve the fuel system pressure by removing the fuel pump fuse and running the engine until it stalls. Once the pressure is released, locate the fuel line connections at the fuel filter and fuel rail. Use a fuel line disconnect tool to press the tabs and gently pull the fuel line off the fittings. Always wear safety goggles and gloves, and have a rag handy to catch any residual fuel.
You must remove the fuel tank in order to replace the fuel pump.
