Im not familiar with the Escort but all dome lights are pretty much the same, place your fingers along the long side of the light cover and your thumb along the opposite and squeeze then pull down. There are tabs along the front and back sides that fit into slots in the fixture so squeezing the dome light cover pulls the tabs out so you can take it off. after replacing the bulb just snap it back in.
in my 88 astro van I had to completely break out the back handle to first get the door open then I was able to remove interior door cover to do thr replacement. in my 99 asto van I was able to remove the interior cover to open the door then replace the handle.

I JUST REPLACE IT A FEW DAYS AGO HERE HOW TO DO IT FIRST REMOVE THE NEAGATIVE CABLE FROM THE BATTERY (IT THE ONE WITHOUT THE COVER) REMOVE 3 SREWS THAT HOLD THE COVER TO THE DOOR THEN WITH A RATCHET AND REMOCE THE NUTS. YOU NEED RACHET, A FEW SOCKETS AND A PHILLIPS OR SLOTTED SREWDRIVER TO ISTALL IS THE SAME CONNECT THE CABLE AND THAT JUST DO WHAT I TOLD YOU BACKWARDS
