I was able to get my lift open by sticking a long, skinny, flathead screwdriver up between the latch and the body. Once it was in I slid the locking mechanism to the right. I got the gate open and was able to get the panel off and temporarily repair the latch.
Not possible. You have to remove the whole light assembly.

If you open tailgate there should be 2 black screws against rear fender - remove these and assembly should pull-out
I'm trying to replace the headlight assembly for a 2000 Jeep Grand Cherokee Lerado. What bolts or screws do I remove
To remove the inside rear hatch panel of a 1998 Cherokee Sport with the door closed, you’ll need to carefully pry off the plastic trim pieces surrounding the panel. Use a flat tool or a trim removal tool to avoid damaging the clips. Once the trim is off, look for screws securing the panel and remove them. After detaching the panel from the clips, gently pull it away to access the lock mechanism.
You have to remove the whole headlamp assembly. Remove the 1 bolt 6mm? and pull outwards.
TAke the bolts soose that hold it on. It is an assembly.
You will have to remove the door panel and replace the regulator assembly. In some cases it comes as an assembly with the motor.
you have to remove the door panel to access the inner door and remove the entire door handle assembly ( from the inside). Once you've got the handle out, remove the lock cylinder, to access the broken key.
Remove bolt on top of headlamp assembly. Gently pry and pull assembly straight out. Bulb can now be acessed.
Remove the door panel. Remove the bolt that fastens the regulator to the window. Remove the 3 bolts that hold the regulator assembly to the door. Squeeze the entire assembly through the largest hole and replace with a new assembly in reverse order.
