Use larger ratchet drive set. If your using 3/8 set and that broke, then use a 1/2 or 3/4 drive set even. A long handle ratchet will provide u with more torque at bolt head and allow you to use less "pressure" on the tools. Be sure to use counter leverage as best you can on the ratchet head so you do not cause the socket to "lean" off the bolt head. Finally, because ou have broken the tools, I suggest that you use a name branded tool that carries a lifetime warranty. Usually these tools are made using higher grade metal and although they do not look different, they are very much different. I use tools craftman, mac, snapon, duralast (no questions asked), Irwin (no questions asked), Stanley, there is a large variety of even really good tools. Just stick to lifetime warranty tools. DO NOT use an adapter, get the correct socket for the drive. Adapters are very weak at the point where the socket first reduces size. Typically, the brand name adapters are molded solid as one piece and therefore they are the better choice. .... IE: the bolts holding the starter in are or should be graded 8....very VERY unlikely u will break the bolt.
all you need are wrenches to disconnect battery cables, and sockets and extensions to remove starter blots from starter
9/16 for the starter bolts, either 1/4 or 5/16 for the ignition wire and either 14 or 15 mm for the power wire from the battery

AnswerCould be a bad starter drive - spring broken and not releasing or a bad starter solenoid not opening circuit See "Related Questions" below for instructions on how to remove/replace the starter.

you will need a 6 inch extension,15mm,14mm,13mm,10mm,and 8mm sockets. disconnect the negative battery cable, lift the car up and put it on stands, the starter is located on the passenger side (rear of the engine) underneath the car, remove flywheel shield for better access to the starter, remove the two bolts holding the starter, making sure to note the position of the starter shim, tilt the starter downwards to have access to the wires connected to the solenoid and remove the 2 wires connected on each terminal. After starter is free, you will have to pull it out from where the trans. and the exhaust meet(that would be the biggest gap to squeeze the starter out). Installation is reverse and be sure to replace the shim.
disconnect power from battery, remove wires connected to starter, remove bolts from starter (usually 2), remove starter.
First check for loose mounting bolts at starter. If everything is OK, then remove starter and check for broken teeth on starter pinion gear and flywheel.
