Just doing mine for third time. And I know the lower has to come out . It is a big job and no wonder why shops charge over a grand. If you have a ball joint press good . If not , rent one. Have a good gun and plenty of air . Dont just replace upper , do em both . I cant remember exactly but if you put the wrong one in first it will have to come out otherwise u cant get the other in . You'll know. Good luck and dont forget to align wheels after that.

F250 super duty ball joint replacement?

Ball joints can be a very time consuming affair, but is a required maintenance item for most trucks. The first step is usually removing the steering knuckle. This process is different for various vehicles. To do this you must remove the wheel. Remove the outer tie rod for the steering. Detach brake caliper from knuckle, and set aside. Remove brake rotor. Remove the ball joint retaining nuts. remove or disconnect the axle if 4wd is applicable. Remove the steering knuckle. On most fords the upper ball joint is replaced as one piece with the upper control arm mounted on the frame by two bolts. This may be different on the larger trucks. The lower ball joint should be pressed out and in with a ball joint press (Which can be very expensive.) When finished with ball joints an alignment is needed on many vehicles. That is just a real quick list of things to do on most ball joint jobs. I hope it is helpful.
