Disconnect positive battery cable, safely support vehicle with jackstands or car ramps as necessary. Starter is on bottom of engine on drivers side. Disconnect battery cable and solenoid wiring from starter. Remove 3 bolts that bolt starter to engine, the uppermost bolt is hard to get to and may require obstruction wrenches or determined use of a short ratchet and socket. Installation is basically reverse of disassembly, no shimming or other procedures are necessary except standard connection protocalls as to the wiring and terminals. Maintain correct order of installation, repair or replace damaged cables or terminals as required. Make sure all connections are tight and secure and clean. Except for the one hard to get to bolt, this is a very easy starter to replace and can easily be held in the correct place with one hand.

What can cause starter problems on a 1993 ford escort?

The starter is just a DC motor so the motor gets dirty inside or the armature and brushes wear. If the battery is good and yet you just hear a click or nothing or even the starter spinning, the next most likely cause is the starter motor. They are cheap to replace yourself, though the job is a little tight. See wikianswer on 1993 Ford Escort for the process.
