Depending on the size of the motor it could be on either side of the truck. The 4.2 6 cyl is on the passenger side. It should be on the same side as the battery. Most truck starters have 3 bolts. It's fairly easy.
If you have to ask how to take the starter off the best information for you would be to buy or borrow a "Haynes" type repair manual for your year truck.
