Unless you have all these tools:

2 - 5 ton rated, ratchet-type auto/truck jacks.

1 - Coil Spring Compressor. [*see note]

1 - Set of 5-point, Metric, Deep Socket's and 1/2" drive ratchet wrench.

1 - Set of Metric, Combination wrenches (2mm-18mm).

1 - Hayes or Chilton's Repair - SPECIFICALLY FOR A Ford 2004 EXPLORER.

[You failed to mention your engine size, 2 wheel or 4 wheel drive, trim

package like XLT, Eddie Bauer, etc.]

1 - Adult, at least 18 years old, to help you.

1 - 5 ton, roll around, hydraulic floor jack [Harbor Freight sells one good/cheap!

1 - Asphalt or concrete (smooth) you can work on. Keep rain off your work.

4 - Hours of labor with TWO people; add 1-2 HRS. if by yourself.

[ *note = in 2002, Ford dramatically changed the suspension of the Explorer's.

The second thing is the very large, coil spring, which you can seen, IF you

turn your tires all the way to the right or left, then switch off the ignition.

Upper and lower "Control Arm's" are what that giant coil works with, along

with the "strut'", right in the middle of that coil. Using a "Coil Compressor" is

DANGEROUS, as is changing the strut. WEAR GOOD- Leather Gloves, as you

will bust a nuckle or two IF you don't. I suggest you buy the Chilton's Repair

Manual, as it has much better descriptions, pictures and references than the

Hayes Manual does, IMHO.]

Plan on having a cell phone on you, in case you do this by yourself. I have body bagged a few, who tried to do this alone, and no cell phone was on any of them. They all died of "head trauma." More questions? Post them and, you minds well replace BOTH struts while you are at it. This will only add a couple of hours, since you have everything set-up and all the tools you need. Your tires will wear better, and you'll sure have a better ride! IF you have an Advanced Auto Parts in your area, they will sell you the struts and LOAN you the tools you need to do the job, except the cell phone. Soo many folks I know shade-tree

repair and/or replace parts that should be replaced if they are "paired", which struts are: you have a Driver and Passenger side strut. Why do you think they sell break lights, headlights, or even center link ends, in pairs? IT's meant for you to REPLACE BOTH sides of whatever, AT THE SAME TIME!

God be with you and BE SAFE!
