In general, there are two possibilities. 1, remove the entire speedometer cable and housing, replacing it with a new one. 2, if the cable housing is still intact you can get an inner cable and just feed that through. Some of the inner cable kits can be difficult to cut to length so you may need to put it in, check for length then pull the inner cable out and follow the instructions for cutting it to length.
On a 1990 Jeep Cherokee, the speedometer cable is located on the transmission. It connects to the speedometer gear housing, which is typically found on the driver's side of the transmission. From there, the cable runs up to the dashboard, where it connects to the speedometer itself. If you're looking to inspect or replace the cable, you'll need to access both the transmission and the dashboard area.
To replace the speedometer cable on a 1990 Nissan Pulsar, first, disconnect the negative battery terminal for safety. Next, remove the dashboard cover to access the speedometer, then disconnect the cable from the back of the speedometer gauge. Underneath the vehicle, locate the other end of the cable connected to the transmission; unscrew and remove it. Install the new cable by reversing the removal steps, ensuring it is securely connected at both ends before reassembling the dashboard and reconnecting the battery.
IF THE CABLE IS DAMAGED, THE HOUSING IS DAMAGED. ITS A COMMON PROBLEM. REPLACE WITH NEW PARTS
To change the speedometer in a 1990 Dodge van, start by disconnecting the battery to ensure safety. Remove the dashboard trim and unscrew the instrument cluster to access the speedometer. Carefully detach the speedometer cable and remove the old speedometer from the cluster. Install the new speedometer, reconnect the cable, reassemble the cluster, and replace the dashboard trim before reconnecting the battery.

Then, remove the instrument cluster by unscrewing the retaining screws and carefully pulling it out. Locate the speedometer cable at the back of the cluster and unscrew it from the speedometer; then, trace it down to the transmission, disconnect it there, and replace it with a new cable. Reassemble everything by reversing the steps, ensuring all connections are secure.

To change the speedometer cable on a 1990 Toyota truck, disconnect the cable, feeding it through the grommet, then disconnect it from the transmission. The process can then be reversed with the new cable.
There isn't a speedometer cable. There is a speedometer sensor, where it is located I am still trying to find out. On the tranny or in the speedometer or somewhere else?

No, it uses a cable.
It would probably be cheaper to replace the cable, check with your local auto wrecker. This used part should be very inexpensive, compared to repairing it.
Replace the speedometer cable. Better yet, replace the car. I had this problem in my 94 acclaim. Somehow it had gotten severed and no new part was needed. Take it to a mechanic you trust and all it will cost you is labor. No need to replace the car.
