If the rubber seal is cracked or broken, put on a gasket and gasket sealer to avoid leaks. If there is no rubber seal, you will need to place the thermostat in position, and then put on a gasket and gasket sealer. Bolt the elbow back on (this does not have to be cranked to death, just make sure it's tight). Reconnect the radiator hose. Put the radiator cap back on.
