What kind of Pontiac? Bonneville, Grand Am, Grand Prix, Firebird, Sunbird, Sunfire, Parisenne, etc? You probably have a bad latch, replace it I just ran across this on my car and all I had to do was check latch alignment and align the latch
The trunk light switch on a Pontiac Sun Fire is typically in the latch assembly. This is usually inside the trunk and under the carpet.
To change the trunk release cable in a 1997 Pontiac Sunfire, first, open the trunk and remove the interior trim panel to access the cable mechanism. Disconnect the old cable from the latch and the release handle inside the car. Replace it with the new cable, ensuring it’s properly routed and secured. Finally, reattach the interior trim panel and test the trunk release to ensure proper function.
it "should" be to the right side and bellow steering wheel .if it is equipped with one.maybe check at trunk latch first to determine the car has this"option" In my 2001 Sunfire, it is on the left side bellow the steering wheel.
You must first remove the trunk door facia. (This is the part with the "Pontiac" lights in it.) Then you can get to the bulb to replace it.
in the trunk or under your back seat

To fix the trunk of a 2001 Pontiac Grand Am, first check the trunk latch and hinges for any obstructions or damage. If the latch is malfunctioning, lubricate or replace it, and ensure the key fob or manual release is functioning properly. If the trunk won't open from the inside or outside, you may need to access the latch mechanism through the rear seat to manually release it. Finally, inspect the wiring for any issues if the electronic components aren't working.
