To replace the tone ring on a 2006 Ford Escape, you'll need to first lift the vehicle and remove the wheel and brake components to access the hub assembly. Once exposed, remove the hub assembly from the vehicle, disconnect any necessary wiring, and then replace the damaged tone ring. Reassemble the hub assembly, ensuring all components are securely reattached, and then reinstall the wheel and brake components before lowering the vehicle. Always verify the proper function of the ABS system after the replacement.
I have a 2006 Escape and had the same problem. Turned out to be a cracked ABS Tone Ring.

You pop off the retaining ring with a small screwdriver (the notch is towards the back of the ring) and the switch slides out. Simply slide the replacement switch in and replace the retaining ring. The new switch costs around $27 and took less than ten minutes to replace.
The tone ring on a 2007 Ford Escape is a toothed ring that is part of the vehicle's anti-lock braking system (ABS) and traction control system. It is typically located on the wheel hub or axle and works in conjunction with a sensor to detect the speed of the wheels. The tone ring generates a signal as the teeth pass by the sensor, allowing the vehicle's computer to monitor wheel speed and help prevent wheel lockup during braking. If the tone ring is damaged or malfunctioning, it can lead to issues with the ABS and traction control systems.
