You will need to have the engine scanned for codes and the repair made. Then you can have the check engine light reset. If the repair is not done then the light will come back on.

You need to have it checked for codes. You can then diagnose and repair the cause. After repair, you can clear code with a scan tool, or by unhooking the battery.

Unhooking the battery and reconnecting it is Not a good idea as it may cause a voltage spike and damage the computer the same as taking a battery cable off with the engine running and then reinstalling it to see if the alternator is working or not.
