To fix the Pontiac Sunfire if it jumped time, the timing belt has to be replaced. Then the car has to have the timing set again after the belt is replaced.
Probably computer controlled and not adjustable
you cant, its factory pre set. non adjustable
If the engine is stock, I'd set the initial timing at 12, make sure the timing mark starts to move when you rev the engine off idle, and watch it advance up to somewhere in the 30 - 35 degree range when it stops. Do this with the vacuum advance disconnected. Then with the timing set at 12 with the engine at idle, hook up the vacuum line to the distributor and see that the timing now shows somewhere in the high 20's to low 30's of timing.
you probibly need to change the water pump to a newer year. there is no difference between the 400 and the 455 besides the year. if you use the pump for the 455 it should work or go to the salvage yard and get pully setup for the 455.
You don't- it's controlled by the PCM. If is has a 2.5 engine you cann't adjust the timing
Both engines that are available in the sunfire are electrically controlled timing. You do not need to do anything to sett the timing, the ECM does all the work.
please send diagram of timing chain What engine type is your Grand Am? 2.4, 3.1 or 3.4?
The timing is electronic and is not adjustable.
A "timing set" includes all the parts needed (new timing chain, tensioners, sprockets, etc.) A timing set for this car costs $132 and up.
