This procedure is for a non computerized vacuum advanced Chevy 327 and most all other non computerized Chevy small block engines.
This procedure requires a timing light, a 1/2" or 9/16" wrench, something (chalk or grease marker) to mark the harmonic balancer timing mark for reference and a rag to clean the stationary timing indicator and a basic timing light.
Check the harmonic balancer to find the timing mark, it should be a clearly cut notch which you can mark with chalk. If you can't find it, try turning the engine over and re-checking for it.
Locate and clean the stationary timing indicator with a rag. It should be located on the timing chain cover usually on the drivers side of the engine viewed from the top, very close to the water-pump.
On the indicator there should be lines and numbers corresponding with the notches. The notches are usually in increments of 2. There will also be the letters BTDC (before top dead center). Find your timing spec for your engine (check your manual) and be sure to either mark or remember where the mark is.
Locate your distributor (8 sparkplug wires coming out of it, centre rear of engine near firewall) find the vacuum hose attached and remove it from the distributor and plug the hose.
One thing I find useful is to mark the distributor for rotation so if you end up with a problem, you can rotate it back to your original starting point and start your procedure again.
At the base of the distributor on the engine block you will find a distributor retainer held down by bolt with a 1/2" or 9/16" head. Use a wrench to loosen the bolt and make sure the bolt is free and then lightly snug it back down ensuring not to rotate the distributor yet.
Hook up your timing light, red clip to positive on battery, black to negative on battery, third clip goes around the number one spark plug wire (drivers side nearest radiator), be sure to check the clip, some are marked "towards plug".
Ensure all cables are routed and secured away from all belts and fan as damage may occur when you start the engine.
Start engine and let it warm to normal operating temperature. When warm, and running, you should see the light flashing from the front of the timing light. Point the flashing light at the timing indicator and you should see the notch on the harmonic balancer that was marked earlier come into relation with the timing indicator. If you rotate the distributor, you will see the notch move in relation to the indicator. By loosening the distributor retainer a small amount, you should be able to rotate the distributor with a little bit of resistance. Please be careful when leaning over belts and fan while engine is running or personal injury may occur.
Rotate distributor until the notch lines up with the desired mark on the timing indicator and tighten the distributor hold down. Re-check timing and reconnect vacuum line at distributor, remove timing light wires and you are done.
4, to 8 degrees.
6-8 degres
on the two gears that the chain runs on, there are "dots" close to the teeth. align those "dots", and the chain will be in time.
How do you set the timing on a 2000 Chevy blazer (V6)
In order to set the timing on a 98 Chevy 350 vortex, you have to time with a scan tool that will let you set timing. Or let garage do it
how do you set the timing for a 1997 Chevy 350 5.7 engine
how do i set the timing for a chevy 350 small block?
6 degrees advanced, or BTDC.
How do you set timing on 1988-1995 Chevy Tahoe moters 5.7l?
There is a big difference in how timing is set. We need to know what year.
That requires an engine scanner to set the timing.
The timing on a 2.8 V6 Chevy S10 needs to be set any time the valves, heads, or crankshaft are worked on. The gears of the timing chain and timing sprocket need to be aligned to set initial timing.
