if your pump is bad, you probably wont be able to hear it, as it will just stop. if you have your ear against the tank and have a buddy turn the key on, it should run for exactly two seconds and turn back off. if you hear it run but your car wont start, see if you can get your hands on a fuel pressure gauge (autozone or similar might lend you one) and check your fuel pressure. if it is a vortec, it needs at least!!! 55 lbs of pressure. otherwise if it has more than 30 it should at least run, even if poorly
It feels like your running out of gas
To determine if the fuel pump is bad on a 1988 Honda CRX, listen for a humming sound from the fuel tank when the ignition is turned on (without starting the engine). If you don't hear this sound, it may indicate a failed pump. Additionally, check for fuel delivery by disconnecting the fuel line and turning the ignition on; if no fuel comes out, the pump may be faulty. Lastly, if the car cranks but does not start, it could also suggest a bad fuel pump.
that means your fuel pump is going bad and is working harder to keep up...replace it soon
To determine if the fuel pump is bad on a 1987 Chevy G20, check for a lack of fuel pressure by using a fuel pressure gauge at the test port. Additionally, listen for a humming sound from the fuel tank when the ignition is turned on; if there's no sound, the pump may be faulty. Inspect the fuel pump relay and fuse for any issues, and look for signs of fuel leaks or damaged wiring. If these checks confirm no fuel delivery, the fuel pump likely needs replacement.
If the relay is bad, then the fuel pump will not work.
It should start to make a whistling sound when the pump is hot or fuel is low in the tank. Replace the Fuel Filter while you have the tank out.
It turned out to be that the motor in the fuel pump was good but the pump was shot, thus the humming sound. I replaced the pump only and bingo! Everything is fine.
bad fuel pump bad fuel pump
Bad fuel pump, blown fuel pump fuse, bad fuel pump relay, or clogged filter.
To determine if the fuel pump is bad on a 2000 GMC Savana, listen for a humming sound from the fuel tank when you turn the ignition key to the "ON" position (not starting the engine). If you don't hear this sound, it may indicate a malfunctioning pump. Additionally, you can check for fuel pressure at the fuel rail using a pressure gauge; if the pressure is below the specified range, the pump may be faulty. Lastly, if the engine is cranking but not starting, it could also suggest a fuel pump issue.
The easiest way is to just turn the key to the run position and listen for a quick humming sound from the rear of the car. That sound it the pump running to pressurize the fuel system. If you cannot hear it (have someone listen in the trunk) you have either a bad fuel pump or an electrical problem pertaining to the fuel system.
Its not uncommon at all for a fuel pump to whine, in fact its more often than not bad if you cant hear it.
