Thermostats operate in a way so as to control (through their extensions) temperature about a selected setpoint. Some are fixed and some can have the setpoints selected. There must be some "sensor" in the device that will react to changes in temperature. The response of the "sensor" is used to direct intervention to affect control of the temperature. Wikipedia has a good post on the different types of thermostat and how they work. A link is provided.
Bad Thermostat
Your thermostat is stuck open.
The negative feedback system. It works much the way a thermostat works. When the temperature in a room drops below a set level, the thermostat signals the furnace to turn on. Once the furnace has raised the temp in the room to the set level, the thermostat signals the furnace to shut off. It will continue to stay off until the thermostat signals that the temp has dropped again.
check the spring in the thermostat or just buy a new one from autozone for 15.00

this 'thermostat' you speak of is called the hypothalamus and is located pretty central in the brain. it works with the hormonal system to regulate the body's temperature.
A thermostat.
Probably your thermostat
A thermostat works on a bi-metal strip. The strip consists of two different metals that contract and expand at different rates. This causes the strip to bend as it heats up or cools down. This action triggers the thermostat to switch an appliance on or off.
pull off the cover and unscrew the wires. twist red and white together. if it turns on, your furnace still works and your thermostat is bad(if it didnt work previously)
