It isn't so much "HARD" as it is time consuming.
The oil pump on the 4 cylinder Saturn engine is integrated into the front housing which is also the timing chain cover.
To remove the timing chain cover it's generally considered to be easier if you remove the engine, then pull the dampener pulley and the valve cover to get to the timing chain cover.
It isn't really a difficult thing to do, but it is time consuming.

How can I replace the headlamp on a 2000 Saturn SL1
The water pump on a 94 Saturn S1 is replaced by removing the serpentine belt, engine accessories, and water hoses. The pump can then be unbolted from the engine block and a new pump put in place.
Almost all electronic injected vehicle manufacturers put the fuel pump inside the fuel tank. Saturn manufacturers were not among the exceptions.
To replace the power steering pump on a 1999 Saturn SL1, first, disconnect the negative battery cable and remove the serpentine belt. Then, detach the pump's fluid lines and unbolt the pump from its mounting bracket. After removing the old pump, install the new one by reversing the process, ensuring all connections are tight, and refill the power steering fluid before testing the system. Finally, check for leaks and ensure the steering operates smoothly.

My son's 1999 Salvaged/total Saturn SL1 was rebuilt using many engine and body parts from 1995-1999 Saturn SL1 and SL2 cars, I believe it will work fine. I do not recommend before 1995 or 2000 or later models. I do not recommend SL2 either. I am not the expert but most of my son's engine is not 1999 SL1. Good luck!
